So today was a day without immigrants. There weren't any protests that I saw, but there were a few cars driving around with American and Mexican flags.
The streets were pretty quiet. Traffic was down, but I thought it was kinda nice. I drove through the predominatly hispanic section of town and noticed nearly all the businesses were closed. That kind of makes me laugh, considering they are the only people who shop there. Over all, it was an interesting experiance.
As the debate heats up, I'm of the mind that legislation needs to be changed. Felonizing 11 million people is a bad idea. But so is giving them amnesty. I say fine them, give them an opportunity to become legal, make them pay taxes and SS. Also, fine the hell out of the businesses who hire illegals. Felonize THEM. Then build a big ass wall. BIG! With pterydactlys.
As for the Mexican protest in Mexico, you know that 'not racist' gringo boycott they got going on--wouldn't their efforts be better served fixing their own government? Then people wouldn't have to or want to leave.
Duh.
Posted by Zoso at May 1, 2006 07:46 PMI noticed the protests and stuff on CNN. They pretty much showed that all day. I don't really understand what they are doing. People (mostly hispanics) were walking around holding the American and Mexican flag. What exactly are they trying to do? I'm confused. If they were protesting immigration, why the Mexican flag? If they were for immigration, why the American flag? I do not understand what the point of the protest was.
Posted by: Mia_Hoshifaia at May 2, 2006 07:55 AMThings got a little hairy here in Seattle. Leave it to us. Some guy, obviously stuck in traffic like I was the last time they marched, decided to drive THREW the march rather than around it.
This resulted in people trying to beat him up while the police drug him away. But all in all, it didn't evolve into one of our infamous riots.
Regardless, traffic was light here too, and judging by the PI commentary, no one here cares that they clsoed. Some people said they just won't go to those resturants and stores anymore.
My question is...what will these people do once they have amensty? Once they become legal citizens they're entitled to "real" wages. Which nullifies the purpose of hiring them for "cheap" labor. So what will stop these companies from just hiring more illegals instead of these new citizens?
Then they'll all be unemployed and impoverished. Which drives up the cost of social services and so on...
The lack of foresight these people have is boggling.
Glad to see you made it home, sis. J and I were wondering if you were still stuck in traffic last night. LOL
All we can do now is wait and see what happens. Though J and I pondered what would happen if there was a "Day Without Citizens" day here in the states. LOL Could you imagine the economic ramifications of something like that?
Posted by: Zoso at May 2, 2006 09:29 AMLMAO. They'd probably claim that we didn't want ANY of the jobs, and that we should appreciate them because they'll do those jobs too.
I got a auto-reposnse from Cantwell. I was unimpressed with her position. She has lost my vote. I say we write J in as a candidate. lol
Posted by: Sarah at May 2, 2006 10:27 AMI haven't gotten a response. :(
J would be a great write-in candidate. Except we'd have to write him in as Shazaam, not J.
Posted by: Zoso at May 2, 2006 11:03 AMRiots riots everywhere. These're dark days, kupo.
