The bill defined assisted reproduction as causing pregnancy by means other than sexual intercourse, including intrauterine insemination, donation of an egg, donation of an embryo, in vitro fertilization and transfer of an embryo, and sperm injection.
It then required "intended parents" to be married to each other and says an unmarried person may not be an intended parent.
A doctor could not begin an assisted reproduction technology procedure that may result in a child being born until the intended parents have received a certificate of satisfactory completion of an assessment required under the bill. The assessment is similar to what is required for infant adoption and would be conducted by a licensed child placing agency in Indiana.
The required information includes the fertility history of the parents, education and employment information, personality descriptions, verification of marital status, child care plans and criminal history checks. Description of the family lifestyle of the intended parents also is required, including participation in faith-based or church activities.
WTF?
No, wait: What. The. Fuck?
I don't even live in Indiana and I got pissed reading about this stupid bill proposed by Sen. Patricia Miller (R). Was she doing the crack behind the water cooler when she thought this doozy up? That has to be it, because anyone who thinks something like this is a good idea has got to be on something. Multiple somethings. Maybe even a new drug we haven't even heard about yet.
Jesus Christ in a swimming pool!
Yes. Lets start culling the people who can and cannot breed. That's a great idea. But at least start with the lowest rung on the gene pool. Stupid people, like Miller, for example, shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. Nor should any of the people you find on THIS site either. Oh, wait, nevermind, they're all dead. But you get my point.
Did she honestly think the American people would nod their collective heads and go, "Gee whilickers Ms. Miller, I think you're right!"? Apparently she did:
Duh!
What a fucking idiot. Where did this twit get the crazy idea that two parents and a piece of paper automatically make good parents? 'Cause you know, no kid from a two parent family has been abused, turned out rotten, or lived in poverty. And there's never been a single parent that raised a decent, responsible, child--ever! Let's not forget that everyone who goes to church is a good and honorable person, competent enough to raise kids! Just look at the Catholic Church and those adoring priests! (sorry, couldn't help myself)
Ms. Miller. Get a clue. And while you're at it, mind your own fucking business and do your damn job--which doesn't entail shoving your moralistic values down the people's throat.
Posted by Zoso at October 7, 2005 12:28 AMThat is pathetic. Absolutely bloody pathetic. What about gay couples? Don't they exist in her world?
Posted by: DR at October 7, 2005 12:43 AMI'm guessing that this bill was largely aimed at deterring gay couples...
But, yeah, what if a woman has a damaged uterus and asks another woman to bear the child for her? Is her husband going to have to commit adultery then? I mean, that sort of defeats the whole purpose of artificial insemination, etc...

If they didn't meet Miller's "qualifications"! Either that or buy a baby on the blackmarket. Oh! They could even kidnap one! It's cheapter...
I too think this bill was largely aimed at homosexuals, but it was offensive to just about everyone. Personality tests? Background checks? So what, if you like a type A personality you can't have kids? Commited a stupid crime when you were 18 and did time for it? NO KIDS FOR YOU! Have been with a person for 10 years but don't believe in marriage? Forget it!
Ugh...I've gone off again...sorry!!!! Ha ha! It just makes me so angry that anyone would even propose such a thing!
Posted by: Zoso at October 7, 2005 06:54 AMWhile I can't support denying reproduction to single people or gay people, I've often thought restricting breeding rights of stupid people would be a good idea.
Posted by: Sarah at October 7, 2005 07:45 AMI actually prefer the phrase "Jesus Christ on a pogo stick!"...
I do think it's a good idea to have certain restrictions on assisted reproduction, like if the parent has had a long history of child abuse or something, but a law like that is just seriously fucked up. Being a married catholic doesn't mean you're automatically a good parent, and being single, homosexual, or non christian doesn't mean you're a bad parent. Does she only want the Catholics to breed? Some of the nicest people I know meet hardly any of those restrictions, and they're great parents! The sad thing is that a law like that might be given actual consideration in some parts of the US.
Posted by: LW at October 7, 2005 12:23 PMI'm not sure if she's a catholic or not. I was just poking fun at the sterotype. She's religous though, but not sure which denomination.
I agree with the history of domestic violence, repeat drug offenders, pedophiles, etc. But signaling out unmarried people, homosexuals, religous preference, etc. is just rediculous.
Posted by: Zoso at October 7, 2005 01:49 PMThis is fucked up. It is embarrasing enough to have to go through invitro or any other artificial insemination process, without having to fill out a novel of useless paperwork and have everyone and their mother review you. What are they going to do? Watch the "parents" go through their daily lives to determine who is and isn't ready for a kid? What if a couple want a child but someone has something wrong with their reproductive system. It is wrong to have a board or Ms. Miller decide whether or not you are allowed to have children. And if church is a requirement, isn't that against the law? Isn't America a free country? Who has the right, in this country, to determine whether or not you can have a child based on your faith? Granted it won't be solely based on your faith, but that is a factor. I'm glad that I don't live in Indiana. I couldn't stand to have an idiot Senator proposing fucked up bills, in the name of my state.

What's scary is they had to vote this woman in...
Posted by: Zoso at October 7, 2005 07:27 PMAnd that they did vote for her. It's probably one of those times where you wanna kick yourself in the butt.
