*Shakes head*
To this idiot who said "whites should suffer to so they know how it feels." Uhm, read some real history books (not those red manuals you have that refuse to accept that the great wall can't be seen from space), and try again when you have a valid point. American colonization is the story of white people suffering. People being persecuted for their religious beliefs (in most cases fleeing to save their lives) to a new world. Once they got her, most of them died anyway because they didn't know what to plant, when to plant it, and weren't used to the nation with the most eratic and severe weather patterns in the world.
Yeah. All rainbows and lollipops there. I can sure see the care bears playing baseball in their pilgrim hats. Dumbass.
Back in reality, America is a beautiful state of being in some way and horrible backward in others. You know something though... I doubt you'll ever find a place that has facilitated as many different races, culture, and religions as successfully as America.
In today's America you are sooner to see a skin head beaten to a bloody pulp than a minority... and lord knows it's easier to be a minority in America in a lot of ways. America does everything it can to ensure everybody has an equal shot. Now if everybody would stop whining about how hard it is to be a minority (and this is coming from a minority) then maybe they would actually get somewhere in life!
Ahem... France... are you still mad about the fries?
Posted by J at November 30, 2005 07:21 PMYeah, skin heads and KKK are vile. Nobody likes them, except their own inbreeding brethern.
I think Katarina is good example of American outrage against discrimination and poor government response. Everyone was PISSED OFF. Though I'm more inclined to believe that it was discimination based on social status (ie: being poor) than being black. *shrug* Still, you didn't see white or other minority peoples turning their backs on the people of New Orleans because the majority of them were black. Instead, you had people gathering up anything and everything they could, sending money, opening their homes, and later, offering to go down there to help repair the city.
I totally agree that people need to stop whining. Stop using gender, race, sexual preference, disabilities to get what they want for free. The US has taken political correctness to an entirely new level--and absurd level. Offend no one. Be senstive. There's such a thing as being 'too sensitive' and that's what's happened to this country. Everyone has to walk around on eggshells these days and it's no surprise resentments run high.
When will people stop being color swatches and start just being people? I cannot, for the life of me, wrap my head around the mentality 'your skin is different so you're not as human as I am'. It completely boggles my mind.
Posted by Zoso at November 30, 2005 08:46 PMI didn't know that other countries pointed fingers at Americans about racism, and frankly it doesn't make sense. Racism is, sadly, everywhere. No country should be pointing a finger at another country and saying "You have racial issues." Almost every country has some form of racial issues. I am not saying that America is perfect, because it is not. We do have racism, but hell, at least we are trying to stop it.
Posted by Mia Hoshifaia at December 1, 2005 07:59 AMHave you heard about the recent case of Anthony Walker in my country? ;___; It's sad when these things happen. England isn't exempt from that list either.
Posted by DR at December 1, 2005 10:49 AMMia- I hear a lot about how racist the US is compared to other countries. I just shake my head. I think most of it has to do with how badly the rest of the world sees us right now, so they blow things out of proportion. As J said, we are no worse than most other countries and FAR better than many (you should see racism in Japan--it's astounding). http://www.japantimes.com/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?nn20031009a5.htm
Ah, DR! That is a sad, sad story indeed. This is the example that I hear many people from other countries using against the US. As if American minorities are being brutally murdered everyday in the US. It happens everywhere, just as you pointed out. Even worse, in some countries, it's justfied.
There's no country void of discrimination. :(
Posted by Zoso at December 1, 2005 03:27 PM"We are all human beings. We all laugh. We smile. We love and cry. We mourn. We feel pain, happiness, and joy. Our cultures might be different, our colors might be different, but beyond that we are all just human. Why is that concept so hard for us to grasp?"
T_T That's so beautiful. Wins for TRUTH.
